Picking Technique

Question by Tom

Do you have an article or video on picking technique, how to hold pick, what type of pick to use, how to alternate picking, arm,and wrist position, anchoring vs free hand etc etc?

M-A’s Answer:

Unfortunately, there’s nothing of that kind on JazzGuitarLessons.net

The whole idea, I think, is that technique is a means to an end, not an end in itself. I usually advise student to work it out as they please…

… as long as the body is relaxed and the sounds produced are consistent (in time, full notes, full chords, etc.). The rest usually takes care of itself.

To support this opinion, there are many cases in which legendary players adopt a quite “unorthodox” (ie their own) way of holding and playing the instrument. I won’t go into too many names here, but I’m sure you know what I mean and who I was referring to (Metheny, Wes, Stanley Jordan, Scofield, Rosenwinkel, etc.)

In any case, if you still wish to have more precise information about those topics, I encourage you to consult renowned references on the matter (classical guitar technique books, methods, berkley college guitar books, etc.) or a local private guitar instructor.
