Which Chord do i choose?

Hi

Barry here, I'm a relative beginner and I'd like to know If I'm using a real book to play from. How do I know which chord to use, because there are multiple options for one chord. How do I know whether to use the 5th string or 6th string root chord. Or is it just trial and error. Great web site!!
