What path should I take?

i just got a guitar, i' m turning 50, willing to devote 20 to 30 hours per week. is jazz too much to attempt or should i just stick to learning familiar cover songs?

Hello,

My answer in a few words :

If you have that much time to spend on the instrument consistently, you'll be able to learn many different "styles". Practice what you like best!

Did you listen to jazz a lot throughout your life? Are you passionate about improvisation and other aspects of the genre? Do you "know" a handful of jazz tunes (in your head)? Do you have your jazz "heroe(s)" that you'd like to imitate?

I think you get the picture. If you are answering "no" to all of these questions, well ...

Learning music (and an instrument) is a process. You'll be stirred naturally towards your "true love(s)" in music.

So, for now, don't worry too much about it. Learn the basics on the guitar and play, play, play...

The rest will follow,
