Slash Chords

When you encounter a chord symbol with a "slash" in it in a standard song, the letter on the right is what the bass is playing...

For example, in Body and Soul you get :

Ebm7

then

Ebm7 / Db

It means "Eb minor7 *over* Db in the bass"


You see a lot of that in more modern tunes (like Pat Metheny songs for instance).

You don't have to play the bass part if you can't finger it... just play the chord symbol on the left and let the bassist do the job!
